How to Use
- Select corrosion environment category (atmospheric, marine, industrial, buried) using the cat-filter dropdown
- Input material type (carbon steel, stainless 316L, aluminum 6061), exposure time in years, and temperature range
- Run simulation to generate corrosion rate (mm/year), pit depth progression, and remaining wall thickness after specified service life
Worked Example
Carbon steel pipeline in marine environment: initial wall thickness 8 mm, exposure 10 years, seawater temperature 15°C. Simulation yields corrosion rate 0.25 mm/year, maximum pit depth 3.2 mm at year 10, remaining thickness 4.8 mm. Stainless 316L under identical conditions shows 0.02 mm/year with pit depth 0.18 mm, demonstrating 12x resistance advantage critical for offshore applications.
Practical Notes
- Marine category assumes chloride concentration 30,000 ppm; freshwater reduces rate by 60%. Adjust for local seawater salinity if available
- Pitting factor (Pf) varies: buried steel in clay soil Pf=3, atmospheric urban Pf=1.5. High Pf environments require thicker sacrificial margins
- Cathodic protection effectiveness (typically -0.95V vs Ag/AgCl) reduces corrosion rate 95% but requires active monitoring
