Worked Example
RC low-pass filter with R = 1 kΩ, C = 100 nF, Vin = 5 V DC. Cutoff frequency fc = 1/(2π×1000×100×10⁻⁹) = 1.59 kHz. At 1 kHz AC input, impedance Zc = 1/(2π×1000×100×10⁻⁹) = 1.59 kΩ. Voltage divider yields Vout ≈ 3.1 V with phase lag φ = −32°. Simulator confirms steady-state node voltage 3.1 V and reports 25 mW dissipation in resistor.
Practical Notes
- For stability: ensure time-step ≤ 0.1 × smallest RC or L/R time constant; transient overshoot in RLC circuits depends on damping ratio ζ = R/(2√(L/C))
- Verify Kirchhoff's voltage law (KVL) and current law (KCL) in mixed topologies; simulator flags violations
- In AC analysis, watch for resonance peaks when XL = XC; Q-factor = ωL/R determines bandwidth and selectivity
- Account for component tolerances (±5% resistors, ±10% capacitors) in sensitivity sweep mode
